Classes

Classes for 2 to 6 Year Olds

Rockin’ Tots (Ages 2-4) 45 minute creative movement class exploring various forms of dance and music. Developing locomotion skills, balance, creativity, flexibility, and strength. This class will explore different kinds of movement, music, colors, numbers, and use of props.  Rockin’ Tots even performs in the recital at the end of the school year session.

Ballet Stars (Ages 3-5)  These special classes are specifically geared for young dancers and open with short readings, poems, or songs from some of our favorite character books and TV movies. Classes introduce ballet terminology and classroom etiquette followed by beginning level ballet technique, creative movement and introduction to different dance styles.

Tiny Tumblers (Ages 3-5)  An introduction to floor work gymnastics.  Creativity and fun exercises are taught to build flexibility and strength.  Students learn basic tumbling moves such as bridges, somersaults, cartwheels, and headstands.  Our tumbling students do not take part in recitals, but hold in class progress showings instead.

Ballet/Tap Combo Class (Ages 4 – 5) This class is recommended for graduates of our Rockin’ Tots, Ballet Stars or new students at the pre-k/kindergarten age who have not had much dance experience.   Covers beginning level ballet technique and introductory tap or jazz.

Music Lessons (Ages 5+) Most students take private lessons in their music instrument of choice, but we also offer occasionally offer instruction in a group class setting.   Music Students perform in the end of the year music recital.

Ballet  (Ages 6+) Students will be placed in levels I -VI where they will learn to execute technique at the ballet barre, center floor, traveling sequences and choreography. Classes will concentrate on elements of flexibility, body alignment, and ballet terminology. Pointe: Intermediate and advanced ballet students working toward or en pointe will be required to take ballet 2x/week.  Students must meet certain strength and technical requirements to be approved for pointe classes.

Hip Hop (Ages 6+) The evolution of true hip-hop will be explored as students learn body isolation, footwork,  hip-hop choreography and basic break dancing moves. It will also cover street jazz and video/urban funk, separating it from the classical jazz styles.

Tap (Ages 6+) This class is for all students who like percussion, music, and rhythm! This class teaches tap terms along with different ways to incorporate them with each other. Tapping is an excellent way to gain coordination and rhythmic musicality. As students advance, they will work to develop speed, complexity, and improvisational skills.

Classes for 6 to 11 Year Olds

Taekwondo (Ages 6+) This is a Korean Martial Art form. Students learn terminology and forms (series of movements) for each color/level belt. They also learn how to count in Korean, bow, stances, punches, kicks, warm-ups, basics of the art, and street awareness. Our Taekwondo students are trained by members of the MUDO college of Taekwondo in Orange Park.  Students also get to perform belt testing once or twice a year.

Learned skills include dive rolls, hand stands, cartwheels, round-offs, walk-overs, handsprings, back tucks, aerials, etc. Safety and proper technique is emphasized.  Our tumbling students do not take part in the end of the year recital, but hold in class progress.

Jazz (Ages 7+) This class offers an upbeat and fun style of dance from which the movement is based ballet but the music is pop oriented and theatrical in nature. Classes work on flexibility, alignment and terminology as it relates to the jazz syllabus.  We recommend ballet as a pre-requisite to jazz class.

Acro Dance (Ages 7+) Students who enjoy mixing tumbling skills with their music and dance will love this class!  Working towards the end of the year recital performance, students will learn how to execute tumbling and acrobatic skills individually and with partners specific to their choreography. Great class for those who love cirque!

Modern/Contemporary (Ages 7+) dance reinforces proper body alignment while exploring both the technical and creative aspects of dancing.   Students will be introduced to ideas of fall/recovery and contraction/release along with dance improvisation. Along with creative explorations, modern teachers sometimes incorporate acrobatic styles of movement that often appeal to gymnasts and other athletes.

Musical Theatre/Acting (Ages 7-12) With growing exposure to opportunities to perform in commercials and television shows, acting experience is becoming increasingly important. Dramatic play, monologues, and scene development are components of this class.

Classes for Teens (12+)

Ballet  Students will be placed in appropriate levels where they will learn to execute technique at the ballet barre, center floor, traveling sequences and choreography. Classes will concentrate on elements of flexibility, body alignment, and ballet terminology. Students who study ballet 2x per week will be considered for pointe classes as they move into ages 12 and level IV ballet.

Pointe: Intermediate and advanced ballet students working toward or en pointe will be required to take ballet 2x/week.  Students must meet certain strength and technical requirements to be approved for pointe classes.

Competition Dance

Being a part of the North FL Dance Center’s award-winning dance team and competition classes is an experience of a lifetime!  Our competition students make life-long friendships and wonderful memories while gaining self-esteem, leadership and problem solving skills, as well as the value of a hard work ethic.  Our dance company takes part in extra performing during the year at local festivals and community outreach events, the chance to attend a special dance workshops, compete in 2-3 springtime competitions and of course take part in our end of the year recital!  Although we are one team entity, we offer our students and families different levels of commitment from as little as 3-4 hours per week all the way through our elite training program of 10-15 hours per week.

Music Classes

We offer private music lessons to ages 5 – adult.  Most of our students study piano, guitar, percussion/drums, and voice.  We also offer lessons in string, woodwinds, and brass.  Our music students meet once per week for ½ hour lesson.  Please inquire by calling 904-406-4161 or emailing [email protected] if you would like more information on specific instrument offerings.

Birthday Parties

Our birthday parties are available for kids ages 3 to 11, as well as young teens.  Choose from themes like Princess Party, Ninja Hip Hop, Superhero, Rumble Tumble, Dance Party, etc.!  The instructors at Asbury Arts Center will lead a fun-filled 45 minute class or dance party in one of our large dance studio rooms followed by time for cake and gifts in a separate party room.  The fee is $220 which includes the first 15 guests. We take care of the set up, activities, teaching your private class, and clean up.  The birthday child and his/her friends all receive Asbury Arts Center goody bags and you get to relax and enjoy the day!  Birthday parties can be scheduled for select weekday mornings and most weekends.  Contact our office at 904-406-4161 for more information!

Summer Session

Join us for Asbury Arts Center’s Summer Camps! Enrich your child’s summer and keep them active with a wide variety of themed summer camps to choose from. Our camps incorporate skills in different areas including dance, tumbling, music and art. They’re the perfect way to try something new and make new friends! Workshops and Events

Asbury Arts Center occasionally offers workshops and special events like Hula Hooping Workshops, Adult Ballroom events, Parents’ Night Out, Valentine’s Day Parties, Guest Teachers/Master Classes for Dance, etc.   Our events are separate from our regular classes and we have a special events calendar for them!  Go ahead and click the button to learn more about our upcoming workshops and events.
